[Repost for morning crowd]

In short, the block has been successfully disassembled, pistons and connectors, the rods and such, and all the nuts and bearings to go with them. Unfortunately, we broke a ring on piston #5 trying to get it out of the cylinder, but all the rings were gonna be replaced anyway so it's not a big deal to me.

First time I got my hands dirty with a motor too, had no complaints about it. :)

Luckily I made friends with a nice car guy on campus who used to have an RX-8 and a Fiat 124 Spider; he's now got a 300+ WRX "blob eye". He's going to help me with my project and we're using the empty storage basement at his apartment to do this; complete with his entire chest of tools; including the much needed torque wrench! :D

Tomorrow, I'm going to clean it up as best as I can and de-grease it now that all the parts are free; starting with the block, which we found out was originally painted black from the factory; as such, it'll be repainted a dark matte color when cleaned up.

Also, more importantly, everything is lined up and organized properly so I know where everything is and will be when I need it.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Also now is a good time to start listing out the parts I will need/want so that's gonna happen soon. Not tonight because I'm tired. But we're making good progress so far, much better than I anticipated, this was a rather simple task and it's fun.

Oh, and K-Rolls first impression of the '15 Mustang will be up soon. :)

Oh well, as long as the title is changed, I'll deal with it.

It was super fun!! Then a big spider showed up and I went to war with it; it was a hell for 5 minutes and a toolbox was total overkill, but very satisfying. Have you received my email?

I wish I was there to see the Karl Vs Spider cage match, haha.Yes, I received the email. I'll edit them tomorrow when I have better lighting

You really didn't miss much. It was a staring contest followed by a certain kill via toolbox drop.

But yeah, i was kinda like Kill Bill.

If they are not numbered, did you label the main caps when you took them off?

they're numbered. We matched up the pistons to their connectors accordingly.

I drive a miata so right now not sure what use I would have for it but I always wanted to rebuild a chevy 350. So my point is this looks fun!

I totally should be studying for mechanics, but I'm going to find the best deals on parts for you at advance auto, rockauto, and craigslist.

I'm kind of late getting back here, but did you think to mark the rods and pistons in case you decide to reuse them if they are ok?

You should seriously consider getting a stroker kit to make it a bit easier to reach your goal.

I would get a 331 stroker kit with forged crankshaft, pistons and H-beam rods myself.

The pistons and their connectors already have numbers and have been organized as such.

I'm not sure how to check the pistons though. My friend is insistent that we get new pistons.

What does a stroker kit do? Does it require any extra machining to the motor. I don't think I'm up for it if so.

Any ways I can get close with more parts, 302 pistons, and I want to start compiling a list of parts as well.

Do you remember the direction they go into the block? That is critical.

Do the pistons have any numbers stamped into the tops?

To "check" the pistons you will need a micrometer large enough to measure their outer diameter and feeler gauges to check the piston ring grooves for wear, along with a close visual inspection to ensure there isn't any damage or cracks. If you were building an economy engine and cared nothing about poser, then using your original pistons would be ok if they are in good shape, however I am inclined to agree with your friend and you would get new pistons anyways with a stroker kit.

A stroker kit increases the cubic inches of an engine which will allow it to make more power and torque more easily. Besides possibly boring and honing the cylinders ( something you may/will need to do anyways ) there is no "extra" machining to be done with a 331 cubic inch stroker kit that I can remember. However, larger cubic inch stroker kits usually need to have some "clearancing" performed around the bottom of the cylinders and possibly other areas on the bottom of the block.
